Simon graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa in 2000 with an honours degree in physiotherapy. His early experience was in sports physiotherapy working closely with the Natal Rugby Union in sunny Durban, South Africa. In 2001, Simon returned to the UK to pursue his interest in the field of medical acupuncture. He is now an accredited member of the British Medical Acupuncture Society and specialises in the use of medical acupuncture/dry needling in the treatment of pain. In particular the treatment of myofascial pain syndrome and integrating acupuncture into the treatment of sports injuries.
Simon moved to Dublin in 2006 and has continued to gain extensive clinical experience in private practice. Simon joined TherapyXperts Mount Merrion in 2006 and is now practice principal, alongside his wife, Lorraine Carroll.
In conjunction with his clinical work, Simon completed an MSc in 2008 at the University College Dublin (UCD). This involved a research project exploring the use of neuromuscular stimulation and real time ultrasound imaging in the treatment of low back pain. Since then he has been invited to present his research throughout the world, the most recent being at the EMBC Biomedical Engineering Conference in Vancouver, Canada.
As a clinical educator, Simon lectures at the UCD School of Physiotherapy and Performance Science in spinal manual therapy and therapeutic exercise. In association with the British Medical Acupuncture Society he provides training in acupuncture to medical and allied health professionals in the UK and Ireland.
In his spare time Simon enjoys keeping fit with a keen interest in health and nutrition. He finds the practice of yoga particularly useful for maintaining core strength and flexibility which compliments his love of surfing. |
