| | | Developed in the 1920's by Joseph H. Pilates, the Pilates Method is a series of approximately 500 exercises. Pregnancy or pre natal Pilates integrates and modifies these specific exercises for the pregnant woman and her changing body throughout the different stages of pregnancy.
The principles of pre natal Pilates are the foundation of strong and effective core movement. Pilates participants will benefit from this unique form of exercise, not only in class, but in everyday activities during pregnancy and in the postpartum period. Over the course of the pregnancy the demand of your growing baby can lead to a number of changes within your body such as postural changes and muscle imbalances. These mechanical and accompanying hormonal changes can lead to pain and discomfort in the back and pelvic region. Pregnancy Pilates offers peak physical conditioning working the body from the inside out to prevent and alleviate such discomforts.
Our pre – natal Pilates classes work the body as a whole, coordinating the upper and lower musculature with the body’s centre. This dramatically improves the body’s strength, flexibility, posture and coordination. The classes also integrate pelvic floor muscle activation which is essential in every pregnant woman’s ante natal regime. Relaxation and breathing exercises are incorporated at the end of the class to help the mum to be to take some time to herself and her growing baby.
Pre – natal Pilates: Pilates during pregnancy is usually commenced after the 12th week of pregnancy. Prior to this, it can be done with the written consent of your Medical Doctor looking after your ante –natal care. Please click here for:
| | | | | | Post – natal Pilates: Pilates postpartum can usually be commenced from 6-8 weeks after the birth, provided you have had a normal delivery. If you have had a normal delivery and have had no complications after birth or during your pregnancy you can commence a Beginners Pilates Group Class. If you have had a C-section or other complications during delivery, it can take a lot longer (12 – 20 weeks) before you are able to join a class.
After giving birth, it is very strongly recommended that you consult our Chartered Physiotherapists for a one to one private consultation before joining a class. At this consult your medical history will be taken and a full physical examination will be done to ascertain your current physical fitness postpartum. Separation of the rectus abdominus muscle which is one of your tummy muscles occurs in a large percentage of women towards the end of pregnancy. The medical term for this is ‘Diastasis Recti’ and needs to be assessed whether it has re-joined prior to commencing abdominal and core exercises. It is imperative that you are looked after right from the beginning of your postpartum exercise regime to prevent any complications in the future.
